Montepino Logística, one of the largest logistics providers and asset managers in Spain, has been active in the Catalan market since 2018. The company currently has five projects in Catalonia, covering a total built-up surface area of over 47,000 m2 and representing an investment of €51 million. These contribute towards the company's plan to expand on a national level and strengthen its leading position in the turn-key solutions sector.
These five last-mile and small cross-docking platforms, located close to the urban centres, are now playing a key role in managing the increase in e-commerce activity. However, despite the fact that these are among the most essential types of logistics hubs, there are insufficient numbers of these platforms for several reasons, including the lack of land in strategic locations, such as in Barcelona.
Juan José Vera, the Director-General of Montepino, explains that "Montepino's investment in Catalonia demonstrates how the company has been able to stay ahead of the market, offering bespoke installations that are modern and certified; platforms that allow our clients to effectively respond to the increase in e-commerce demand we are seeing at the moment."
The projects in Catalonia
Montepino first began work in Catalonia, one of the main areas of logistics activity in Spain, two years ago, when it purchased an area of land covering 22,914 m2 in the Can Serra industrial estate in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Barcelona. The land is located in a strategic area due to its proximity to Barcelona, as well as its direct access to the AP-7 and A-2 motorways, which link the French border to the Levante region and the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Montepino then went on to purchase land in Castellbisbal and Barberá del Vallés.
These five projects, of which three have been completed and delivered, consist of the following:
- A cross-docking, last-mile delivery platform, created for XPO Logistics in Castellbisbal, covering a total surface area of 37,656 m2.
- The new logistics and industrial centre for Eternity Technologies in the Can Serra industrial estate in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, with a total surface area of 10,508 m2.
- Platform B of the Can Serra industrial estate in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, which will be used as a distribution centre and which occupies a total surface area of 12,468 m2.
- A last-mile platform under construction in Barberá del Vallés covering a total surface area of 10,070 m2, which is to be delivered in June 2021.
Castelbisball Project II, which is to be delivered in September 2021. It covers a total surface area of 30,015 m2 and will be used as a distribution centre.
